MSW Pathway FAQ

Q: What is the difference between SCWK 6000 Pathway and SCWK 6417 Pathway Scholarship?

A: SCWK 6000 is a mandatory, non-credit, repeatable program requirement during which students choose a topic, find an instructor, and research their area of interest. It forms the foundation for SCWK 6417 and is taken over several semesters. SCWK 6417 is a continuation of Pathway and is the capstone course, during which students develop a scholarship product or project and present it at the end of the course. It is the last course completed in the MSW program and is completed in one semester. As the culminating academic experience, SCWK 6417 requires students to demonstrate the knowledge and skills developed throughout their graduate studies.

Q: When do I submit the Learning Contract?

A: The Learning Contract can be submitted at any point while registered in SCWK 6000, but no later than two months prior to the start of the semester in which students wish to register in SCWK 6417. This allows time for the ADGPR to review the Learning Contract, and for the student to address any concerns arising before the start of SCWK 6417.

Q: Can the Scholarship Product or Project be a group project?

A: Pathway Scholarship is an individual course, and a scholarship product or project must be a student’s individual work. While a scholarship product or project may be part of a larger project and collaboration is encouraged in a broader sense, the student’s contribution must be clearly delineated, allowing the product or project to be assessed as an independent piece of work. Students are required to submit an individual Learning Contract and present their individual product or project at the end of SCWK 6417.

Q: Can I complete Pathway Scholarship before taking other courses?

A: As the capstone course, SCWK 6417 is taken at the end of the MSW program, after all required courses have been completed. However, students can complete Pathway Scholarship in the same semester as SCWK 6917 Field Practicum if they wish.

Q: Can I complete SCWK 6417 Pathway Scholarship over multiple semesters?

A: No. The Pathway Scholarship is taken during student’s final semester in the MSW program and must be completed within that single semester.

Q: How are SCWK 6000 Pathway and SCWK 6417 Pathway Scholarship graded?

A: SCWK 6000 is not graded. The final grade given in SCWK 6417 Pathway Scholarship is either PASS or FAIL.
