Are you eligible to apply?

To be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work as a First Degree program or the Bachelor of Social Work as a Second Degree program, students must complete all required prerequisite courses. Direct admission from high school into the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program is not available.

Students who are not yet eligible to apply for entry into the BSW program

If you do not have all the required prerequisite courses completed for admission directly into the BSW program (e.g., applying from high school, or transferring with some but not all prerequisite courses), then you may first need to apply to Memorial University for admission and be accepted as an undergraduate student to complete the required prerequisite courses. When completing the application, choose “Unsure (Undergraduate)” as the Area of Interest.

Please note that Memorial University has multiple admissions deadlines throughout the year. 

Students who are eligible to apply for entry to the BSW program

Current Memorial students or transfer students who have completed (or are in-progress to complete) all of the required courses for admission into the BSW program can apply to either the BSW as a First Degree or the BSW as a Second Degree program. If you wish to be considered for both programs, you must submit separate applications for each with all required documents.

Application Deadline:

The application deadline is March 1 of the year of admission. 

Admission into both BSW programs is available for the Fall semester only.

Applicants who are currently completing or have completed courses at another institution (including College of the North Atlantic*) and who wish to use those courses toward the BSW admission requirements but have not previously had those courses assessed for transfer credit at Memorial must submit:

• interim/unofficial transcript to admiss.docs@mun.ca by March 1 (if courses are in progress), and
• detailed course outlines/syllabi to transfer.credit@mun.ca for transfer credit evaluation by March 1.
• Applicants must arrange for a final official transcript to be received directly from the issuing institution at admiss.docs@mun.ca no later than June 1 of the year of application.
• Applicants applying for the BSW as a Second Degree who completed their first degree at another institution should note that an official confirmation of degree must be received directly from the issuing institution at admiss.docs@mun.ca by June 1 of the year of application.

* Applicants who have completed, or are completing, the Mental Health and Addictions diploma at College of the North Atlantic under the approved 2+2 pathway are not required to submit course outlines/syllabi.

Required documents submitted after the deadline above will not be accepted.

Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

If you wish to be considered for readmission to the BSW program, please contact bswprograms@mun.ca for further instructions. For fall readmission, please contact no later than February 1, and for winter readmission, no later than August 15.

Completing the Application

To apply for the BSW as a First Degree and/or the BSW as a Second Degree, you will need to submit the online application through the Admissions portal.

The application for the BSW program typically opens in mid-October for the following year’s Fall intake.

To apply, you must select "Create Account" or if you have already created an account, “Sign In”.

Once your account is created and you are signed in, select “Create a New Application,” and select the type of application that applies to you (Current Undergrad Student, Canadian applicant, or International applicant). Please note, if you are a current Memorial student you must select “Current Undergrad Student” as the application type. 

Choose “Social Work (Undergraduate)” as your Area of Interest, and then “Bachelor of Social Work (as a First Degree)” or “Bachelor of Social Work (as a Second Degree)” as the Academic Program.

In addition to completing the online application (and submitting any transcripts/course outlines if applicable), applicants are required to submit the Personal Statement and Experience Form.  This form must be uploaded under the Documents & Supplemental Items tab within the Admission Portal. To upload the form under the Documents & Supplemental Items tab, applicants must first complete the “Review” tab and submit their application. Once the application is submitted, the applicant will receive an email with further instructions. The applicant must then return to the Admission Portal and upload the Personal Statement and Experience Form under the Documents & Supplemental Items.

An online application with all required documents must be submitted by the application deadline of March 1.

Applications submitted without all required documents will be deemed incomplete and will not be considered.

Educational Equity Initiative

The School of Social Work strives to enrich its teaching, research and scholarship through the contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds with different attributes. However, for many applicants, institutional processes and cultural and racial differences exist which have presented barriers to learning.  In keeping with the Canadian Association of Social Work Education (CASWE) Standards for Accreditation, the mission of Memorial University, and the mission, vision, and values of the School of Social Work, we have developed our Educational Equity Initiative.
