Internship in Social Work Research

This course provides PhD scholars with an opportunity to develop and refine advanced research skills while focusing on their individual research interests and academic learning goals. While the course supports diverse research pursuits, it offers a flexible structure that allows for assignments aligning with students’ progress toward comprehensive examinations and dissertation research, fostering expertise in their chosen field of study.

The PhD scholar will be expected to:

  • Engage deeply with their research area by developing assignments such as a comprehensive literature review, theoretical framework, methodological paper, social work research/program evaluation, social policy analysis focused on a substantive aspect of intervention and/or target population, or other writing and research output that meets the agreed-upon learning objectives.
  • Hone critical thinking and analytical skills to evaluate and synthesize scholarly literature.
  • Strengthen their understanding of key concepts, theories, and methodologies relevant to their research field.
  • Engage in an independent research process with guidance from a faculty mentor, refining research questions and approach while receiving constructive feedback.
  • Produce high-quality, academically rigorous work that advances their research and professional development.

This course is designed to support the PhD scholar’s research activities and academic trajectory, fostering both the theoretical and practical skills needed for impactful research.
