Continuing Professional Education

The School of Social Work, and its Continuing Education Committee, seeks to provide continuing education opportunities for social workers across Newfoundland and Labrador. Some of these events may also be of interest to other professionals in the health and social sectors. Events are conducted on Memorial's St. John's campus and in the local community, with digital access for some events. The school partners with other organizations to plan and facilitate events.

If you would like further information about continuing education initiatives, or to discuss development of possible continuing education opportunities in collaboration with the School of Social Work, please contact Ashley Curnew, Graduate Student Services and Continuing Education Coordinator, at (709) 864-2557, or ahcurnew@mun.ca.

Does the Internet Make Bullying Worse?

October 10, 2017, Memorial University

This lecture has a wide appeal to multidisciplinary service providers, including social workers, educators, law enforcement and other social service agencies, as well as parents, who are all concerned about child and family well being.

Dr. Faye Mishna, dean and professor at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto, will present findings on her research conducted among Toronto area students in Grades 4, 7 and 10 which found that 10% had been bullied over the Internet and through other technologies such as text, instant messaging and other social media. This lecture will share insights into how to identify the signs of cyber bullying and the kids victimized by it. There will be an emphasis on the importance of working with kids so they learn to be empathic and stand up for others. The implications of the research findings for social work practice, policy and research will be addressed.

This presentation will be recorded by the Center for Innovation in teaching and Learning (CITL) for future learning opportunities. Please be advised that attendance in person serves as consent to being recorded.
