Social Work added to Loan Forgiveness List
Memorial University’s School of Social Work was pleased to learn of the recent federal government decision to include social workers in its Canada Student Loan Forgiveness program.
“The federal commitment to student loan forgiveness for social workers practicing in rural and remote communities is a positive policy step toward reducing financial barriers and supporting a more equitable distribution of the social work workforce,” says Dr. Sulaimon Giwa, associate professor and interim dean, School of Social Work. “By easing early-career financial pressures, the initiative may make rural practice more accessible and attractive to graduates motivated by service, but concerned about long-term financial sustainability.”
The School also recognizes that research and practice consistently show that recruitment and retention in rural and remote communities depend on more than financial incentives alone. Sustainable workloads, access to supervision and professional supports, and strong community infrastructure are essential to long-term workforce stability and practitioner wellbeing.
As a School, we view this policy as aligned with our commitment to preparing graduates for the complexity of rural practice and to working with community and government partners to strengthen supports for practitioners. While we are happy that some of our students will be able to benefit from the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness program, addressing longstanding workforce challenges will require coordinated, system-level investments that support both social workers and the communities they serve.
