Music At Memorial Backstage
Music At Memorial Backstage is an opportunity to experience life at the School of Music. It takes place on the Thursday and Friday immediately prior to audition weekend in St. John’s. You get the chance to shadow a current music student to classes, rehearsals, and masterclasses. The Student Music Society hosts an informal pizza lunch and meet-and-greet. We then step outside the School of Music to show you what the entire Memorial University campus has to offer. To help you feel fully prepared for your audition the next day, practice rooms will be available for your use.
And don’t forget the Faculty Gala Concert on Thursday night! This concert highlights the talent – and the wit! – of our incredible School of Music faculty. All Backstage participants receive free admission to the Faculty Gala Concert.
We encourage all applicants to register for Music At Memorial Backstage. Contact us for more information.
To apply to the Master of Music in Conducting program, you must first submit an application to Memorial University.
As part of your application, you must submit a pre-screening video and a list of recent and relevant conducting experience. Your pre-screening video should show you conducting an ensemble that matches the concentration to which you’re applying (choral, instrumental or combined). For instance, Choral Conducting applicants should conduct a choir. Instrumental Conducting applicants may conduct a wind ensemble or an orchestral ensemble. Combined Conducting applicants should conduct both a choir and an instrumental ensemble. You should include music of different styles and style periods.
The video should be 15-20 minutes in length and be of high quality. It must include both a rehearsal and a run-through. During the rehearsal portion of the video, please position the camera so that you capture a frontal view of the conductor. The run-through portion of the video may be a concert performance.
Deadline to submit your pre-screening video and list of conducting experience is December 15, 2019. Please submit these materials directly to the School of Music. You may upload your video to YouTube and email us a link, or you may send your video through the mail.
School of Music faculty will review the pre-screening videos in January. They will then extend invitations to select applicants to perform live conducting auditions on the Memorial University campus (date of live conducting auditions TBD). The live conducting audition will include the following:
• Conducting student ensembles (repertoire TBD)
• Interview with School of Music conducting faculty
