Chen Graduate Scholarships in Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry has been provided with a gift of $100,000 per year for 10 years by Dr. Liqin Chen, a graduate of the department. The funds are to be used to provide scholarships to graduate students in the department.
Using these funds, the Department of Chemistry will provide awards valued at $2500 to 40 eligible students registered as of January 1, 2018. Any eligible students registered as of January 1, 2018 who did not receive an initial award, will receive a $2500 award in September of 2018.
Beginning in September 2018, all eligible incoming students will receive a $3000 Chen Entrance Scholarship. The remaining funds will be used to provide Chen Excellence Doctoral Scholarships of $5000, granted competitively based on research, academics, departments citizenship (outreach, leadership, and safety), and (if applicable) teaching performance
For entrance scholarships, candidates must be ranked as average or higher by the admissions committee. The recipients must be enrolled as full-time students in the M.Sc. or Ph.D. chemistry programs, be eligible for a SGS Baseline Fellowship , and be in good academic standing. Students may hold a Chen Scholarship only twice during their graduate studies at Memorial. Students who already hold a scholarship that provides funding above the $25,000 level (e.g., CGS-D and Vanier) are not eligible for a Chen Scholarship. Awards may be made to students in the semester following the last semester of SGS Fellowship eligibility.
Funds not committed after the winter admission cycle will be awarded as Chen Excellence Doctoral Scholarships worth $5000. The Deputy Head will issue a call for nominations no later than April 1. Nominations must be submitted by the supervisor to the Graduate Secretary within 4 weeks of the call for nominations. Nominees for the Chen Excellence Doctoral Scholarships must meet the following criteria:
- Be registered full-time as a PhD student in the Chemistry Department, normally in the 3th year. Students accepting the award may be in their 5th year but must be registered for the Fall semester following the acceptance of the award.
- Meet the requirements for an SGS Fellowship
- Have successfully passed their comprehensive examination
- Normally have completed all required graduate courses and hold an average of 75% or higher
- Normally have published, been awarded a patent and/or presented results at national and/or international conferences based on their research conducted in their current graduate program at Memorial University.
Nominations for the Chen Excellence Doctoral Scholarships will normally come from the student’s Ph.D. supervisor and will consist of a CV, letter of reference from the nominator, and a nomination summary such as that provided in Appendix A. Nomination packages will be accepted by the Graduate Secretary as one pdf file.
Eligibility of nominees of the Chen Excellence Doctoral Scholarships will be confirmed by the Chemistry graduate studies committee then forwarded to the School of Graduate Studies Awards Committee for selection of award winners. An announcement of the award winners will be made in July.
In accepting the award, a student must agree that their name be made public and be provided to the donor. Recipients are expected to send a letter of thanks by e-mail to the donor and participate in other initiatives of the department to recognize his generosity. A group photo of the Chen Scholars will be taken annually and posted publically.
