Laboratory Safety for Students

All students involved in lab work or exposed to hazardous materials must complete mandatory Laboratory Safety and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training before entering labs. Courses requiring this training will list SC 1807 and SC 1808 as prerequisites.

Required Training

Students must complete two free online courses:

  • SC 1807 - Safety in Science Lab (Lab Safety)
  • SC 1808 - WHMIS

These courses are available on Brightspace and take no longer than two hours to complete. Registration for SC 1807 and SC 1808 is through Memorial Self-Service, following course registration.

Accessing the Courses

After registering, access to SC 1807 and SC 1808 will be available within six hours. Students can log into Brightspace using their login ID. Each course includes presentations followed by a quiz, requiring a minimum score of 80% to pass.

Students must complete SC 1807 and SC 1808 by the end of the add period for the semester they are registering for their first lab course. Failure to do so will result in deregistration from related science lab courses. These courses only need to be completed once during undergraduate studies.

Winter 2026 Registration

  • SC 1807 - Safety in Science Lab: CRN 63087
  • SC 1808 - WHMIS: CRN 63089

Courses are available for Winter 2026 semester registration and should be completed by January 24, 2026.

Completion Requirements

  • SC 1807 or SC 1808 Completion: Required for first-time lab course enrollment involving hazardous materials.

Students will be notified on self-serve if SC 1807 and/or SC 1808 prerequisites are unmet.
