St. John’s, NL, November 1,, 2013:  Start the Christmas season off with the powerful combination of some of the best choirs with an orchestra.  On Saturday, November 23rd at Cochrane Street United Church, award-winning choirs, Lady Cove and Newman Sound, join forces with the acclaimed MUN Chamber Orchestra to bring you an array of masterpieces for choir and orchestra, including  Gustav Holst’s Christmas Day, John Rutter’s glorious Magnificat, and the Canadian premiere of Arvo Pärt’s In Principio, as well as many beloved traditional carols like you’ve never heard them before!

"This is the perfect concert to ignite your Christmas spirit," said Jennifer Hart, Artistic Director of Newman Sound Men’s Choir. “Newman Sound is delighted to join forces with Lady Cove and the MUN Chamber Orchestra. The repertoire we will be performing is among the finest composed for choir and orchestra that celebrates the holiday season.”

Established by Kellie Walsh in September 2003, Lady Cove Women’s Choir is named after the community of Lady Cove in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador.  Lady Cove has been recognized as a world-class choir, winning first place in the 2008 CBC Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs in the contemporary music category and at the 2008 Béla Bartók New Music Competition in Debrecen, Hungary.  The choir recently released it’s second recording, Heart’s Delight.  Lady Cove will compete at the 8th World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia in July 2014.

Pride, versatility and musical excellence best describe Newman Sound Men's Choir. Named after a beautiful and rugged region in Terra Nova National Park, Newman Sound is a true community choir of more than forty singers, led by Artistic Directors Jennifer Hart and David Chafe.  Newman Sound received a 2012 ECMA nomination and won Music NL's 2011 Classical Album of the Year award for their debut CD, The Green and Salty Days, a collection of traditional music from Newfoundland and Labrador.  In 2012, Newman Sound was named Champion Male Chamber Choir at the 7th World Choir Games in Cincinnati, USA.

Since its inception in 1995, the Memorial University Chamber Orchestra has become an integral part of the music scene in St. John’s.  Under the direction of Vernon Regehr, the Orchestra has been involved with a number of exciting collaborations within the School of Music including presentations of Humperdink’s Hansel and Gretel as well as fully staged productions of Mozart operatic masterpieces, The Magic Flute and Cosi fan Tutte.  In 2009, the Orchestra was invited to perform at the International Festival of Ensembles at the Peterhof Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.
