This five-year joint Music and Business degree program began accepting students in the 2019-20 academic year and the inaugural graduates of this program presented their capstone project last week in the course Music Business in Practice.

Music Business in Practice is a course taken by students in the final year of the joint Music and Business program. It allows students to develop and explore business pathways and opportunities in the music industry through project based, experiential learning.

Throughout the Winter 2024 semester, students undertook applied projects under the supervision of instructor Dr. Gillian Morrissey that explored potential career paths in music.

  • Erin Lee completed a placement with Business and Arts NL, an organization that focuses on creating partnerships between the arts and business communities in NL, working on re-strategizing their Public Piano program, and creating evergreen social media content.
  • Matthew Fillier completed a placement with St. John’s-based music services company Hurricane Music learning about commercial music management, and running logistics and marketing for a song writing camp.
  • Stephen Flynn completed an entrepreneurial project developing a live music freelance photography business.
  • Clare Follett completed an entrepreneurial project developing her YouTube channel and learning about social media monetization to drive traffic to her performing and producing work.
  • Hugh Hunt completed an entrepreneurial project researching and developing a social enterprise that focuses on saxophone and clarinet loans and repairs for schools in rural NL.

Congratulations Erin, Matthew, Stephen, Clare, and Hugh!
