A work of great emotional and spiritual depth, the Quartet for the End of Time by Olivier Messiaen is widely considered to be among the most profound works of the 20^th century. Written for piano, clarinet, violin, and cello, it was composed and premiered in a prisoner of war camp during World War II, and features birdsong, unusual rhythmic motives, and moments of serene reflection.
