MUN Archaeology Field Schools 2018
The Department offered two field schools during the summer of 2018.
'Excavating the pebble': MUN Archaeology Field School, Anse à Bertrand, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon 2018
This field school took place in Anse à Bertrand located just outside the city of Saint-Pierre. This site was occupied between the 17th and 20th centuries, and according to historic maps several fishing buildings, potentially a chapel, and a fort were present in Anse à Bertrand.
The 2017 excavations lead to a better understanding of the initial occupation of the territory by European nations during the 17th and 18th centuries. The 2018 digs allowed us to further our knowledge on Saint-Pierre's small fishing settlements located in Anse à Bertrand.
This year’s field school taught students a variety of skills crucial to the practice of archaeology including archival research, geophysics, survey, excavation, conservation and cataloguing.
Labrador Institute Field School 2018
The 2018 Labrador Institute Field School took place in Upper Lake Melville, Labrador between July 2nd to August 3rd, 2018.
Students participated in a variety of archaeological activities in the field and classroom, including the excavation of a 3,000-year-old campsite in Sheshatshiu, Labrador.
