Research Statement

My research examines historical-era (19th to 20th century) farming in the Strait of Belle Isle region, in the vicinity of L’Anse aux Meadows, to establish the agricultural potential of the region for Viking Age North Atlantic economies. Specifically, the aim is to inquire if the agricultural potential of this region was sufficient for the Norse to consider it desirable and economically feasible for the establishment of the settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows. In so doing, this research seeks to reimagine Vinland as the Strait of Belle Isle through a quantification of the known pastoral agricultural potential of the region.
