ARCH 2494: Game of Genders: Sex and Society in the Medieval North
Instructor: Dr. Shannon Lewis-Simpson
Course Poster (PDF)
This second-year interdisciplinary course will introduce students to the gender spectrum of the medieval north. Gender identity and expression are important to understand the individual within society. In the northern medieval world, a good bit of evidence suggests the prevalence of a cisgender, hypermasculine, militarized society with roots in the Germanic world. On the other hand, queer and non-binary expressions of medieval gender are so commonplace as to question whether traditional gender roles as we know them today existed at all. There are no prerequisites for the course.
