Changes to President’s Award for Outstanding Research

The terms of reference for the President’s Award for Outstanding Research (PAOR) have been updated. Previously, eligibility for the PAOR was limited to tenured or tenure-track academic staff members (ASMs) who received their doctoral degree (or equivalent) within 10 years of the time of nomination for the award. The eligibility period has been extended to 15 years.

“This amendment takes into consideration the increasing amount of time new ASMs spend as post-doctoral fellows before taking up their first academic appointment,” said Dr. Christopher Loomis, vice-president (research). “It also reflects our desire to open up the award to a broader group of qualified candidates, and to better clarify the criteria by which they are assessed.”

Candidates are judged on the quality, excellence and impact of their research, especially their national and international stature as assessed by their peers.

Nominations or applications for the PAOR must include: 1) a one-page citation or an appraisal of the candidate’s research, written in a style that is understandable to those outside the discipline; 2) three external references; and 3) an up-to-date  curriculum vitae(CV).

The Office of the Vice-President (Research) has developed an online template for the CV to  be used for all nominations/applications starting this year. The CV and the terms of reference for the PARO are available at  www.mun.ca/research/researchers/terms_paor.php.

The Office of the Vice-President (Research) will be accepting applications/nominations for this award up until Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at 5 p.m. For further information, please contact Michelle Butt, co-ordinator, internal grants, Office of Research Services, at 709-864-8638.

Recipients of the PAOR are announced annually at the President’s Awards luncheon normally held in December.
