International Career Supports

Memorial University's Career Services provides a broad range of activities, programs, and events designed to focus on skills development and employability for the job market. International students at Memorial have full access to these opportunities, to book appointments with Career Advisors, and participate in the on-campus job opportunties offered through MUCEP,  ISWEP, and GradSWEP (as well as other on-campus job opportunities). 

A pillar program that has been very helpful for a large number of international students over the years is the award-winning Professional Skills Development Program. This is a free, non-credit program designed to equip current international students with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to prepare for professional employment in Canada.

1:1 Career Advising

1:1 career advising appointments are offered to MUN students and alumni by a number of different units across campus. While the Career Development Office offers centralized career-related programming for all students and alumni, targeted services are also provided for certain student groups as follows:

  • Undergraduate International Students can book an appointment with staff at Career Development. 

  • Graduate Students can book an appointment with Xin Wang, Senior Career Development Coordinator at the School of Graduate Studies via email or at 709-864-2976.

  • Business Majors can book an appointment with staff at Embark, the student success centre at the Faculty of Business Administration:

Appointments can be held in-person or virtually.

Eligibility to Work

In order to work in Canada you will need a a study permit issued by IRCC that states that the permit holder “may accept employment” or “may work” in Canada.

If that is the case, you must then apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN). 

If your study permit does not contain that eligibility, you may submit a request for an amendment to your study permit prior to submitting your SIN application.

Working and Staying in Atlantic Canada

The Atlantic Immigration Pilot pilot, launched in 2017, helps employers in Atlantic Canada hire foreign skilled workers who want to immigrate to Atlantic Canada and international graduates who want to stay in Atlantic Canada after they graduate.

There are 3 programs you can use to hire someone:

Atlantic International Graduate Program

Each program has requirements that you and the candidate must meet. Before you make a job offer, you must be designated by the provincial government of the Atlantic province where the candidate will be working. Once you make a job offer, you and the candidate will work through several steps. If you and the candidate meet all the requirements, the candidate gets permanent resident status in Canada.
