Physics
The Co-operative Internship in Physics (CIP) is a collaborative effort between the Co-operative Education Office for the Faculty of Science, the Department of Physics, and local, national and international employers.
The program gives employers access to a qualified pool of technically proficient student workers.
Internship Schedule & Hiring Process
The Co-operative Internship in Physics is a full-time, paid work period of 4, 8 or 12 months duration. Students may be available to start their internships at the beginning of any academic term (i.e. September, January and May).
The process to hire an intern continues throughout the four months before the work term starts.
The co-op office can assist by posting opportunities on our co-op portal, collecting and forwarding applications, and helping to arrange interviews with suitable candidates.
About Our Students
Students are accepted into the CIP through a selective and competitive process usually between the third and fourth years of their program.
To be eligible for the co-operative internship program, students must have a strong academic record and will typically have completed courses in mechanics, electricity and magnetism, quantum physics, fluids and thermal physics, computer science and computational physics, experimental physics, and mathematics (linear algebra, differential equations, vector calculus, complex analysis, Fourier transforms).
Elective courses, e.g., biophysics or physical oceanography, diversify individual student proficiencies. Joint programs allow students further diversification, at some cost to depth in physics, in areas such as chemistry, computer science, earth sciences and geophysics, human biosciences, and mathematics.
Their diversified skills and high motivation levels can be applied to a variety of tasks including quantitative problem solving in novel contexts, setting up lab equipment and interfacing with it to acquire data, data analysis, device and instrument development, and computer modelling.
