Knapping not napping in class!

Students in this semester’s ARCH 4153 - Lithic Analysis class are gaining hands-on experience in manufacturing (knapping) stone tools, and working with artifacts from Newfoundland and Labrador to gain practical skills in analyzing lithic artifacts.

Under the instruction of Tim Rast,  students explore the range of techniques used to study stone tools, including material and provenance identification, morphology and functional analysis, temporal and cultural typology, measurement, illustration, experimental manufacture, use wear and breakage patterns, refitting, debitage analysis and spatial distribution.
