Mini course on GAP

January 13, 2020 - January 17, 2020

Leandro Vendramin

University of Buenos Aires, Argentina

We will give a brief introduction to the software GAP, designed for calculations related to group theory. The course will be mainly based on examples, exercises and application problems. We will discuss several different introductory mathematical topics such as permutations, matrices, groups, rings, and fields. More advanced topics, such as characters and representation of groups, algebras, and other algebraic structures, will also be studied. GAP is freely available at https://www.gap-system.org/

The course will take place in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Dalhousie University, and will also be live-streamed. It will be suitable for undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and everyone interested in symbolic computation.

The first lecture of the mini course will also serve as a colloquium.

The precise schedule is

Monday, January 13: 3:30-5, Chase 319
Tuesday, January 14: 11:30-1, Chase 319
Wednesday, January 15: 12:30-2:30, Chase 227
Thursday, January 16: 11:30-1, Chase 319
Friday, January 17: 12:30-2:30, Chase 227

Leandro Vendramin, the lecturer of the mini course, is a professor at the University of Buenos Aires. Currently, he holds a visiting position at NYU Shanghai. He has published widely on computational methods in algebra. He is also a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The mini course is jointly organized by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Dalhousie University, the AARMS Collaborative Research Group “Groups, Rings, Lie and Hopf Algebras”, and the Atlantic Algebra Centre. The principal organizer at Dalhousie University is Peter Selinger.
