16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence: November 25 to December 10.

16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence is an international effort to highlight the need to create a world that is free from gender-based violence.  The 16 days run from November 25 to December 10.  November 25 is the anniversary of the deaths of the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country's ruler and December 10 is International Human Rights Day. In Canada, we also observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women during the 16 Days to remember the women who were murdered during the tragic mass shooting at Polytechnique Montréal on December 6, 1989.

Supporting international students affected by sexual violence

The Sexual Harassment Office and the Internationalization Office at Memorial have developed a Guide for International students who have been affected by sexual violence.  This project was inspired by Possibility Seeds and Courage to Act who created a customizable toolkit which was used as a template in creating the Guide for international students .

Halloween Safety

Halloween is meant to be fun, spooky and scary - not seriously scary and icky.

We want Halloween to be fun for everyone in our community AND we recognize there is an increased likelihood of sexualized violence during the Halloween season. In part because costumes and masks can provide anonymity to those who want to cause harm and there tends to be more substance use at Halloween events.

Sept. 18-22 is Consent Awareness Week.

During Consent Awareness Week, everyone is encouraged to have thoughtful conversations on the subject of consent. Consent Awareness Week follows Sexual Violence Awareness Week, which this year was Sept. 10-16.

Virtual Adult Healthy Relationships Program Launches

Planned Parenthood Newfoundland and Labrador is launching a virtual Adult Sexual Health and Healthy Relationships program that is open to all. 

Canadians Need Consent Education

A new study from the Canadian Women's Foundation indicates that less than half of Canadians understand the concept of consent as it relates to sexual activity. Read the article here.

December 6th Vigil

The Dec. 6th Vigil was once again held in person this year in the main lecture theatre of the S.J. Carew (Engineering) Building at Memorial University on Tuesday, Dec. 6th from 6-7 p.m. The vigil remembers the 14 women who were killed because of their gender in the Montreal Massacre in 1989 and to honour the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The December 6th Vigil is held annually in honour of the 14 women who were killed because of their gender on December 6, 1989, in the Montreal Massacre and in honour of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This year's vigil will be held in person on Tuesday, December 6th in EN 2006, S.J. Carew Building.

The Sexual Harassment Office met with the winners of the four tuition credits for successful, early completion of the new course SVM 0204: Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention.
