Arlan Vriens
Student Wins Prize at Aldrich Conference

On March 22, 2015, MMus Performance candidate Arlan Vriens was awarded First Prize (Teaching and Learning Stream) at the 2015 Aldrich Interdisciplinary Conference at Memorial University. His winning presentation was titled “Innovation and Obsolescence: Unconventional Notation in Baroque Violin Music.” This research examines creative violin music notation systems which fell out of use after the Baroque period, with a particular focus on 17th-century violin tablature. By examining these works, Vriens hopes to find new insights for contemporary violinists – studying the pedagogical ideologies implied by these notations and making an overlooked corpus of works more readily accessible to contemporary performers.
