Title: Counting points of a representation variety over a finite field

Abstract: This thesis investigates the representation varieties associated with a twice-punctured genus-g surface. Each representation sends the loops around the punctures to fixed conjugacy classes, leading to varieties whose cardinalities can be studied over finite fields. The goal of this thesis to count the number of elements in these representation varieties for the cases GL_{2}(F_{q}) and SL_{2}(F_{q}).
