Bio: Seamus O’Neill is associate professor of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at The Memorial University of Newfoundland. He completed his doctoral dissertation in 2009 in the Department of Classics at Dalhousie University on St. Augustine’s Platonism. Dr. O’Neill’s main philosophical interests are Ancient and Medieval Philosophy, Metaphysics, and the Philosophy of Religion. His research deals with Augustine and other medieval thinkers such as Boethius and Bonaventure and their relation to Plato and the Neoplatonic tradition, specifically concerning mediation and human and divine agency. He has published articles and book chapters on the history of Platonic thought, St. Augustine, demonology, the problem of evil, and the relation of ancient and scholastic thought to contemporary philosophical trends. His recent SSHRC grant is entitled, "Reconstructing the Demonology of St. Augustine" (2014-2016). Currently he is writing on Dante and his philosophical influences and is working on a book manuscript on Platonic and Christian demonology and their philosophical import. Dr. O’Neill has taught courses on Plato, Aristotle, Boethius, Dante, Neoplatonic thought, and the histories of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy, as well as on Greek and Roman myth and drama, and the Latin language.
