Aging & Arts & Health: The Drum Remembers
Please join us as Justine Birabwa, Herman Sebayigga, Ann Nanungi and Agnes Nakabuye tell us about "The Drum Remembers." “The Drum Remembers" is a specialized creative aging and music therapy project in Toronto and Southern Ontario run by the Nexim International Development Organization (NIDO) in collaboration with the Suubi Fusion Troupe. It uses traditional African drumming, storytelling, movement, and rhythmic expression to support seniors (often affectionately referred to within the program as "Roses and Lilies"). The philosophy behind the program is that the body remembers what the mind forgets, making it particularly impactful for elders dealing with cognitive decline, isolation, or dementia. The initiative is also the subject of a book titled Abeeyo: The Drum Remembers written by community volunteer and artist Justine Birabwa. The book has helped to preserve and honour the voices, memories, stories, and experiences of seniors
