Course Descriptions

A selection of the following graduate courses will be offered to meet the requirements of candidates:

Music 6000: Research Methods (1 credit hour). An introduction to music research consisting of an exploration of a variety of print and online tools for finding printed and recorded music and research on music; ensuring appropriate citation of sources; writing program/liner notes and reviews. The course meets 1 hour a week for 12 weeks. Required of all M.Mus. students and should be taken in the student’s first semester.

Music 6002: Graduate Seminar (3 credit hours). This seminar explores selected readings under the broad topic of music in society. Course work includes discussions, written work and presentations. This course is required of all M.Mus. students and is normally taken in the second semester of the program.

Music 6005: Performance Practice (3 credit hours). A seminar course on issues related to performance practices in selected Western musical traditions from the Medieval period to the present day, from different geographic regions and styles of music. Course work includes discussions, written work and presentations. Not offered every year.

Music 6006: Instrumental Repertoire (3 credit hours). A survey of repertoire for instrumental ensembles other than orchestra, with an emphasis on wind ensemble. For instrumental conducting majors. Not offered every year.

Music 6007: Choral Repertoire (3 credit hours). A survey of choral repertoire for choral conducting majors. Not offered every year.

Music 6008: Orchestral Repertoire (3 credit hours). A survey of orchestral repertoire for instrumental conducting majors. Not offered every year.

Music 6009: Music Literature (3 credit hours). A survey of solo instrumental or vocal repertoire. Each section of the course is specific to one applied area, e.g., piano literature, vocal literature, string literature, brass literature, etc. Not offered every year.

Music 6100: Score Study and Analysis (3 credit hours). Development of skills for the study, comprehension and preparation of musical scores in a variety of genres. Required for all conducting majors.

Music 6210: Instrumental Conducting I (3 credit hours). Required for all conducting majors. Includes a weekly one-hour individual lesson and podium time with instrumental ensembles, including one or more of: the MUN Wind Ensemble, MUN Chamber Orchestra and external instrumental ensembles. May include other requirements to be specified by the instructor during the first week of classes.

Music 6211: Instrumental Conducting II (3 credit hours). Continuation of Music 6210. Required for instrumental conducting majors.

Music 6212: Instrumental Conducting Internship I (1 to 3 credit hours). Supervised conducting experience with a community instrumental ensemble. Not offered every year.

Music 6213: Instrumental Conducting Internship II (1 to 3 credit hours). Supervised conducting experience with a community instrumental ensemble. Not offered every year.

Music 6310: Choral Conducting I (3 credit hours). Required for all conducting majors. Includes a weekly one-hour individual lesson and podium time with the MUN Festival Choir and Chamber Choir. May include other requirements to be specified by the instructor during the first week of classes.

Music 6311: Choral Conducting II (3 credit hours). Continuation of Music 6310. Required for choral conducting majors.

Music 6312: Choral Conducting Internship I (1 to 3 credit hours). Supervised conducting experience with a community choir. Not offered every year.

Music 6313: Choral Conducting Internship II (1 to 3 credit hours). Supervised conducting experience with a community choir. Not offered every year.

Music 6400: Music Pedagogy (3 credit hours). A course designed to provide students with knowledge of resources and pedagogical approaches used in studio teaching for all instruments and/or voice at various levels. Topics include basic anatomy for the promotion of healthy technique, pedagogical theories, materials for teaching music theory and musicianship, reading and memorizing music, music technology, group teaching, managing a teaching studio and tax issues for studio teachers. Offered in alternate years.

Music 645A/B: Principal Applied Study I (3 credit hours per semester for two semesters). For students in the performance major. Includes a weekly one-hour individual lesson and may include weekly studio class and/or other requirements to be specified by the instructor during the first week of classes.

Music 646A/B: Secondary Principal Applied Study (2 credit hours per semester for two semesters). Includes a weekly one-hour individual lesson in an applied study area other than the student's principal instrument or voice. Not offered every year.

Music 647A/B: Principal Applied Study I (3 credit hours per semester for two semesters). For students in the performance/pedagogy major. Includes a weekly one-hour individual lesson and may include weekly studio class and/or other requirements to be specified by the instructor during the first week of classes.

Music 6500: Chamber Music (2 credit hours per semester; maximum of 8 credit hours). Student ensembles must prepare and perform a program of 18-22 minutes of repertoire. Nine (9) hours of coaching per semester. Repertoire to be performed must be approved prior to registration. Application form.

Music 6501: Chamber Music (3 credit hours per semester; maximum of 12 credit hours). Student ensembles must prepare and perform a program of 25-30 minutes of repertoire. Twelve (12) hours of coaching per semester. Repertoire to be performed must be approved prior to registration. Application form.

Music 6502: Opera Workshop (2 credit hours). Auditions are held at the beginning of the fall semester.

Music 6503: Opera Workshop (3 credit hours). Auditions are held at the beginning of the fall semester.

Music 6504: Chamber Music (1 credit hour per semester; maximum of 4 credit hours). Student ensembles must prepare and perform a program of 10-15 minutes of repertoire. Six (6) hours of coaching per semester. Repertoire to be performed must be approved prior to registration. Application form.

Music 6505: Conducted Instrumental Ensemble (1 credit hour per semester; maximum of 4 credit hours). Participation in orchestra, wind ensemble or jazz ensemble. Graduate students will be expected to play a leadership role in the ensemble (e.g., section leader, leading sectional rehearsals, etc.) Audition required. NOTE: Students who are receiving an assistantship for their participation in the ensemble will not be permitted to register for this course.

Music 6507: Jazz Combo (1 credit hour). A course for ensemble players who want to learn or enhance the skills necessary to successfully perform jazz in a small group setting. This is course includes 6 hours of coaching per semester. Ensembles must prepare and perform a jury consisting of 10-15 minutes of music.

Music 6508: Jazz Combo (2 credit hours). A course for ensemble players who want to learn or enhance the skills necessary to successfully perform jazz in a small group setting. This is course includes 9 hours of coaching per semester. Ensembles must prepare and perform a jury consisting of 18-22 minutes of music.

Music 6509: Jazz Combo (3 credit hours). A course for ensemble players who want to learn or enhance the skills necessary to successfully perform jazz in a small group setting. This is course includes 12 hours of coaching per semester. Ensembles must prepare and perform a jury consisting of 25-30 minutes of music.

Music 6510: Seminar in Performance Issues (3 credit hours). Practical exploration of selected performance-related issues such as: developing an anatomically sound approach to movement and technique; peak performance and approaches to performance anxiety; topics in practical performance practice, including stylistically appropriate ornamentation and interpretation of contemporary scores involving non-traditional notation; technology for performers, including audio and video recording and editing. Not offered every year.

Music 6600: Pedagogy Seminar (3 credit hours). Each section of this course focuses on the pedagogy of a specific instrument or family of instruments, e.g., piano pedagogy, voice pedagogy, string pedagogy, brass pedagogy. Not offered every year.

Music 6610: Pedagogy Internship I (3 credit hours). For performance/pedagogy majors. Students record the lessons they teach and keep a journal in which they record teaching/learning goals, as well as reflections on each lesson after viewing the video. Videos and journals will be reviewed throughout the semester by the instructor. May include seminar sessions, depending on enrolment.

Music 6611: Pedagogy Internship II (3 credit hours). Continuation of Music 6610.

Music 6700: Career Skills for Musicians (3 credit hours). Exploration of various aspects of the practical side of being a musician, such as taxes, promotion, media, etc. Required for all M.Mus. students. Offered in alternate years.

Music 6701: Music in the Community (1 credit hour), Music 6702: Music in the Community (2 credit hours), and Music 6703: Music in the Community (3 credit hours). Students explore the role of the artist in the community by planning and carrying out a community music-making project. Students will be required to propose a viable collaborative project prior to registering. Graduate students will play a leadership role and will be required to write a final report on the project. The number of credit hours depends on the scope of the project.

Music 6750: Music Industries Internship (2 credit hours). Development of personal and professional competencies through part-time field placement. Placement must be approved before registration.

Music 6802: Digital Content Creation for Musicians (2 credit hours). This course teaches students to create digital content (i.e. music performance videos, online scores), manage social media accounts and campaigns, and build a brand.

Music 7002: Research Paper (3 credit hours). Major research project, which must be approved in advance. Normally taken by ethnomusicology students, but also taken by M.Mus students holding CGS Master’s Scholarships from SSHRC.

Music 7003: Ethnographic Video Methodologies (3 credit hours). This course prepares students to incorporate visual ethnography in their own research and engage with related disciplinary discourses. In addition to learning and practicing technical and artistic components of documentary design and production, the course will focus on the politics of representation in ethnographic video and analyse the role of visual ethnography in the study of expressive culture.

Music 7010: World Music: Musics of Asia and Oceania (3 credit hours). Musical theory, genres, instruments, aesthetics and functions of music in Asia and Oceania, including the classical music of the Indian subcontinent, the musics of East Asia, gong-chime ensembles of Southeast Asia, and traditional musics of Polynesia and Australia. Not offered every year.

Music 7011: World Music: Musics of Africa and the Americas (3 credit hours). Musical theory, genres, instruments, aesthetics and functions of music in Africa and the Americas, including traditional African musics, neo-African musics of the Americas, and traditional South American musics. Not offered every year.

Music 7012: Canadian Musical Traditions (3 credit hours). A survey of musical streams in Canadian music history from colonial times to the present, including indigenous and transplanted musical traditions, as well as Canadian art music. Not offered every year.

Music 7013: Music and Culture (3 credit hours). Study of traditional music as an aspect of human behavior in Western and non-European cultures. Examination of the functions and uses of music; folk and popular music distinctions; and the relations of style to content. Not offered every year.

Music 7017: Folksong (3 credit hours). Introduces students to a wide range of traditional song. Students will hear and discuss local, regional and international examples. Not offered every year.

Music 7018: Jazz and Blues: The Roots of Popular Music (3 credit hours). Overview of blues and jazz as traditional musical forms, including the development of regional music cultures and generic styles. To better understand the shift of blues and jazz from regional to global performance contexts, the course will examine the effects of changing transmissional media, from predominantly sensory media through contemporary media technologies. Not offered every year.

Music 7020: Advanced Form (3 credit hours). This course combines the advanced study of form and harmony with an emphasis on the development of analytical and compositional skills. Form-functional theory will be used in order to examine, analyze and emulate the music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.

Music 7021: Advanced Post-Tonal Techniques (3 credit hours). This course combines the advanced study of post-tonal music-theoretical models and concepts with an emphasis on the development of demonstrating learned concepts through composition assignments. Students will study, analyze, and write compositions based upon—but not limited to—the following: neo-Riemannian transformations, hexatonic systems, serial transformations, and minimalist structures.

Music 7210: Instrumental Conducting III (3 credit hours). Continuation of Music 6211. Required for instrumental conducting majors.

Music 7310: Choral Conducting III (3 credit hours). Continuation of Music 6311. Required for choral conducting majors.

Music 745A/B: Principal Applied Study II (3 credit hours per semester for two semesters). Continuation of Music 645A/B for students in the performance major.

Music 747A/B: Principal Applied Study II (3 credit hours per semester for two semesters). Continuation of Music 647A/B for students in the performance/pedagogy major.
