Brass Ensemble

Since its formation in 2006, the MUN Brass Ensemble has assumed an important place in the musical life of the School, the community, and the province. In addition to its performances at the School of Music, the group has participated in collaborations with the Lady Cove Women’s Choir and Newman Sound Men’s Choir. In 2008 the Brass Ensemble toured the coast of Labrador, presenting community and educational concerts in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Makkovik, Hopedale, and Nain. Performances of the MUN Brass Ensemble have been broadcast on CBC Radio, Rogers Television, and Bell Aliant Community TV.

The MUN Brass Ensemble performs a wide range of music including contemporary and standard repertoire for brass ensemble, transcriptions of music written for other instruments, and music drawn from brass playing traditions around the world. Each year, the ensemble premieres a new work by a student composer. Recent commissions include pieces by Brass Ensemble alumni Jonathan Rowsell, Aiden Hartery, and Colin Taylor.
