REF NO.: 84
SUBJECT: Memorial University to celebrate blue whale restoration initiative
DATE: Aug. 8
President Gary Kachanoski will host a celebration to recognize and thank Mark and Sandra Dobbin and Craig and Lisa Dobbin for an important contribution to Memorial, one that enabled the recovery and restoration of a blue whale that washed ashore on Newfoundland's west coast in 2014.
Designated as critically endangered, the Western North Atlantic blue whale population only numbers approximately 200-250 individuals.
The blue whale skeleton will ultimately be displayed in the atrium of the new Core Science Facility, slated to open in 2020.
The celebration will take place on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m. in The Landing, third floor, University Centre, on the St. John’s campus.
Media representatives are invited to attend. Parking is available in lot 18, Irwin’s Road, in front of the Queen Elizabeth II Library.
