SUBJECT: Media invited to launch of The Fund, Memorial’s first student-managed investment fund
DATE: Oct. 1
Members of the media are invited to attend the official launch of The Fund, Memorial’s first student-managed investment fund, on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m.
Students selected for The Fund will be publicly announced for the first time at the event, which will take place in the RBC Atrium at the Faculty of Business Administration on the St. John’s Campus.
It’s also the official re-launch of the White Trading Lab, a state-of-the-art facility that features Bloomberg terminals and technology and enables users to interact with the global financial community in real time. The lab has recently undergone renovations.
The Fund was created by Memorial’s business faculty thanks to generous alumni donations from Brad White (B. Comm. ’91), co-founder, partner and chair of EdgeHill Partners in Toronto, Ont. and Luke O’Brien (B. Comm. (Co-op.) ’97), vice-president, portfolio manager and wealth advisor at RBC Dominion Securities Inc. in St. John’s. They donated $100,000 and $50,000 respectively to the business faculty.
Attendees at the launch will include the first cohort of The Fund; Dr. Isabelle Dostaler, dean of the business faculty; Mr. White; and Mr. O’Brien. Mr. White previously made a significant donation that enabled the business faculty to create the White Trading Lab.
The Fund will allow students to invest real money in equity and bond markets using the Bloomberg technologies available in the White Trading Lab, thereby providing active and experiential learning opportunities. By filling such roles as portfolio manager, sector manager and analyst, students also will gain experience related to researching investment opportunities, producing security research reports and evaluating portfolio performance.
Faculty advisors and a team of industry professionals will guide students in their investment activities and provide further learning opportunities through workshops and mentorship.
