SUBJECT: Memorial University recognized with national awards for communications and marketing

DATE: July 6

Memorial University has been honoured by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) for excellence in communications and marketing.
The university was presented with six national 2009 Prix d’excellence awards during the organization’s annual conference in Hamilton, Ont., recently.
Memorial received a gold medal for best special event category for I Love MUNdays, an annual series of events at both the St. John’s and Wilfred Grenfell campuses that embrace the diversity, ingenuity, excellence, kindness and community service in evidence at Memorial.
A second gold medal was awarded for best community outreach program for the Memorial-Petro-Canada Habitat for Humanity Build. Over the course of nine days, the university partnered with corporate sponsor Petro-Canada to build a home for a family in need.
Top honours were again bestowed upon Memorial with a gold medal for best program for the student recruitment ceiling ad featuring the Rant Like Rick contest. The campaign challenged high school students to write and perform a rant-worthy video to nab a year’s worth of tuition.
Memorial was singled out for a fourth prix d’excellence award with a silver medal for best print ad for the Vancouver Sky Train-Ceiling Ad. The campaign featured 3-D diplomas falling from a cloud-filled sky on the roof of a rapid transit system in British Columbia.
A second silver was awarded for Best New Idea: Creativity on a Shoestring for MUNlive, an interactive online chat service where prospective Memorial students can ask questions about the university with a live representative.
The university snagged a bronze medal for best brochure for Memorial’s Research Report 2008: Haystacks. The report details the stories that capture the spirit of discovery at Memorial University. With energetic text and sumptuous photography, the report gives a sense of the tenacity and ingenuity that enables Memorial’s researchers to look beyond problems and see solutions.
To top things off, Memorial University employee Jeff Green received top honours as the CCAE 2009 Rising Star award winner. Since 2005, Mr. Green has proved himself to be an invaluable member of the marketing and communications team. He is currently further developing his media relations, publications design and communication skills as communications co-ordinator with the Office of the Vice-President (Research).

The university was awarded a gold medal for its Research Report 2008: Haystacks and picked up a bronze for its “Amazing Students” campaign. The program recognizes Memorial’s student superheros who are outstanding role models and involved contributors.
