SUBJECT: Public presentations by candidates for new director of athletics at Memorial

DATE: April 21

Memorial University’s School of Human Kinetics and Recreation is holding a series of public presentations over the next three weeks to hear from candidates for the position of director of athletics.
Three people are vying for the job – the first of its kind for Memorial.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, promoting, managing and evaluating the varsity athletics programs at Memorial. The director’s duties will also include leading and overseeing the management of the university’s varsity sports programs; building and fostering a team environment for Memorial athletics; and serving as the primary ambassador for all athletics programs, the university and its partners.
The successful candidate will also establish and direct fundraising and corporate sponsorship programs, while cultivating a network of support locally, provincially and nationally through marketing and communications strategies, while fostering positive relationships with the community and media.
Three separate presentations are slated for the candidates. The first begins next week. The applicants are: Michelle Healey, current co-ordinator of intercollegiate athletics at Memorial University; Scott Stevenson, a native of Newfoundland, who is currently the CEO of Syncro Canada and who has worked with Diving Canada; and Gary Corbett, a retired school administrator who is actively involved with Softball Canada on the local and international level.

The new director will start at Memorial in early summer or as soon as the candidate is available.

The university community, general public and stakeholder groups are invited to attend the presentations, which take place in room A-1046 in the Arts and Administration Building on the St. John’s campus. Parking is available free in area 15 or area 15B for a $2 charge. Each presentation begins at 5 p.m., on the following dates:
Michelle Healey         April 24, 2006
Scott Stevenson        May 1, 2006
Gary Corbett              May 4, 2006
