Explore: Approved Program Locations and Transfer Credit
Not all Explore program locations meet eligibility requirements for the French Milieu Requirement.
The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (French division) emphasizes the cultural experience as part of the Work/Study Abroad requirement. To fulfill the requirement, you must attend a francophone university (pre-approved list below), and we encourage the opportunity to experience French Canadian culture outside the campus environment.
Transfer Credit Information
- Some Explore programs approved by the Department receive 3 unspecified credits at the 1000-level.
- On your transcript, this appears as: FREN 1xx3 (transfer credit).
- Unspecified credits mean they are not tied to a specific Memorial course.
- Before you leave your Francophone institution, request that your transcript be sent directly to admiss.docs@mun.ca.

Frequently Asked Questions
How will my French Milieu appear on my transcript?
The French Milieu will be added to your transcript after the program is officially complete, and semester grades are released. For example, on your transcript a 12-week program will appear as “FREN 0012 – PAS", and a 4-week program will appear as “FREN 0004 – PAS".
How do I request transfer credits for my French Study experience?
Ask the institution where you studied to send your official transcript directly to admiss.docs@mun.ca. Transcripts sent by students are not official. Request the transcript before you leave the institution to avoid delays and confusion.
I attended an Explore program while in high school, does it count as study in a French Milieu?
No, the French Milieu requirement must be fulfilled after your first term at Memorial University and before graduation. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the requirement early in your degree to gain the greatest benefit from the immersion experience.
Do new regulations and changes to the French Milieu affect me?
If program rules change after you've entered the program (i.e. after registering for your first 2000-level course), you may choose either following the regulations in effect when you began your 2000-level course or the regulations in effect at the time of graduation.
