About the dean
Dr. April Pike has been appointed Interim Dean of Memorial University’s Faculty of Nursing, effective Sept. 1. 2022.
A longtime faculty member, Dr. Pike has served in the Faculty of Nursing since 2005 teaching in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Dr. Pike has a Bachelor of Nursing, Master of Nursing, and a PhD in Community Health- Faculty of Medicine, all from Memorial!
An experienced educator and leader in the community, Dr. Pike is recipient of the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching (2020) and the President’s Award for Exceptional Community Service (2016). She is also recipient of an Award of Excellence in Nursing Education (2018) from the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (now the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador). That same year she was named to the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Caring Hearts Circle for her advocacy and education about cardiovascular health. She is a member of the Canadian Women’s Heart Health Alliance and the Canadian Nursing Genomics Steering Committee. Dr. Pike is well known for her work in public engagement and volunteer work within the community.
Currently, Dr. Pike also holds the portfolio of the Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Nursing. She has expertise in genetics, the concept of risk, cardiovascular health, organ procurement, and qualitative research methods.
Prior to starting at the Faculty of Nursing, Dr. Pike practiced as a registered nurse (RN) in a number of different areas including critical care nursing. She has practiced as a nurse at the provincial, national, and international level.
She has published in a number of journals on topics such as genetics, women’s heart health, and hearing loss.
