SUBJECT: Merry and Bright Holiday Light Festival at Memorial University Botanical Garden

DATE: Nov. 23

The Merry and Bright Holiday Light Festival is set to launch at the Botanical Garden on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

To make it even more magical, the garden is announcing that its giant, festive puffins have arrived just in time to take centre stage. After spending two summers nesting in Gatineau, Que., as part of the Mosaiculture Garden Festival, the puffins have come home to roost. The garden has partnered with takeCHARGE to wrap the puffins in LED lights and Canadian Energy to power them with solar-charged batteries.

"We are delighted to continue our tradition of supporting this magical event," said Krista Langthorne, manager, energy conservation, at Newfoundland Power. “It is a pleasure to help the Botanical Garden transform itself into a glistening winter wonderland this time of year. By using LED holiday bulbs, the beautiful displays are not only energy efficient, but will last to be enjoyed by patrons of all ages for many years to come.”

50,000 lights

A one of a kind experience, Merry and Bright invites the community to see the garden in a whole new light, with new features and more lights each year. With well over 50,000 lights and hundreds of glowing candles, festival highlights include an extended caterpillar of lights, the giant puffins, a glowing garden of candles and the 12 gnomes of Christmas.

“We are extremely proud to be participating in the Merry and Bright event for our third consecutive year,” said Chad Warren, branch manager, Canadian Energy. “When I walk through the wonderland of lights, it makes me proud knowing that most of the displays are using renewable energy for their sources of power.”

Extended schedule this year

After sold out nights in previous seasons, the garden is thrilled to announce that this year the festival is running more nights than ever. This season, Merry and Bright will take place Nov. 28-30, Dec. 1-2, Dec. 5-9, Dec.12-16 and Dec.19-22.

To make the evening stress-free, all festival parking will be located at the Marine Institute on Ridge Road. Every 20 minutes, guests can hop aboard a free shuttle to and from the festival at 306 Mount Scio Rd., complete with carol singing.

It’s a perfect family-focused way to kick off the holiday season. Come see the garden in a new light. You will walk away feeling merry and bright!
