Memorial University and Nunavut Arctic College celebrate next chapter in teacher education partnership

Oct 29th, 2026

Memorial University is congratulating Nunavut Arctic College (NAC) on its plans to develop its own Bachelor of Education Program, marking an important milestone in a long-standing partnership dedicated to strengthening teacher education and educational leadership in Nunavut.

Beginning as early as fall 2027, new students can enrol in a NAC Bachelor of Education Program. The transition reflects years of collaboration between the two institutions to increase local capacity and support teacher education that responds to the needs, languages and cultures of Nunavut.

“This is a significant achievement for Nunavut Arctic College and for the many educators, students and communities who have contributed to this work over the years,” said President Janet Morrison. “The plans to launch a Nunavut Arctic College Bachelor of Education Program reflects the growth and success of teacher education in Nunavut and is something Memorial is fortunate to have supported through our partnership.”

Memorial and NAC collaborated on the delivery of teacher education through a 10-year partnership agreement focused on advancing post-secondary education opportunities in Nunavut. The introduction of a NAC-credentialed degree represents a planned evolution of that work and a positive outcome of the partnership’s long-term goals.

Current NAC students enrolled in the Memorial University Bachelor of Education Program will continue to have pathways to complete their Memorial degree. Students will also have the option to transfer into the NAC program if they choose.

“Our priority remains supporting student success throughout this transition,” said Dr. Pamela Osmond-Johnson, dean of the Faculty of Education at Memorial. “Students currently enrolled in the Memorial program will continue to receive the support they need to complete their studies and pursue careers in education.”

While NAC will assume responsibility for new bachelor of education student intake, the two institutions will continue to work together.

“The Nunavut Arctic College has grown through its relationship with Memorial University,” said Jackie Price, president, NAC. “We know our collaborative relationship will continue and will be a strong pillar as the college continues its work to support learners, educators and communities across Nunavut.”

The first intake for the NAC Bachelor of Education Program may occur as early as fall 2027, contingent upon the successful completion of all regulatory updates and implementation processes.
