SUBJECT: Memorial University presents Canada Research Chairs lecture, For the Record

Memorial University will hold another in its series of Canada Research Chair lectures on Monday, Sept.13, 2004. The lecture is titled For the Record and starts at 7:30 the Donald F. Cook Recital Hall, School of Music, Phelan Road, located on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.

Dr. Beverley Diamond, Canada research chair in Traditional Music/Ethno musicology, will present On Record: Indigenous Voices, Audio Recording, and Identity. Dr. Diamond will explore the impact of audio recording in the representation of contemporary indigenous cultures. Building on ethnographic research in recording studios and interviews with indigenous musicians, she will investigate practices of recording and mixing sound that are contingent on concepts of aboriginality, gender and music genre.

Dr. Priscilla Renouf, Canada research chair in North Atlantic Archaeology will present the lecture, Off the Record: Archaeology in Port au Choix, Newfoundland. Port au Choix, on the Great Northern Peninsula, contains elements of all the cultures who have called Newfoundland their home. Dr. Renouf will showcase the highlights of the Port au Choix Archaeology Project, now in its twentieth year.

The lecture is open to the public. Parking is available in Lot 15. Light refreshments available.
