SUBJECT: Memorial University to host conference on workplace violence and harassment
DATE: May 11
A one-day conference focused on workplace violence and harassment will be held at Memorial University on May 13.
Hosted by Memorial’s master of employment relations (MER) program, in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research and SafetyNet, the conference will be held at the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
“This conference is both timely and important,” said Dr. Alan Hall, director of the MER program. “While harassment and violence are increasingly recognized as major health, legal and employment relations issues, workers, managers, unions, lawyers, mediators and policy makers continue to struggle with the challenges of prevention, intervention and resolution.
“This conference seeks to review and discuss the emerging body of research, employment policy and legal reform on workplace harassment and violence. It also seeks to address some of the difficult practical and legal questions associated with protecting workers through effective identification and reporting mechanisms, better forms of intervention and improved followup for workers who have experienced harassment and violence.”
The event includes a panel discussion covering current research, policy and legal issues, poster presentations on the latest research in the field, a keynote address by Dr. Sandy Welsh, a leading researcher and vice-provost of students at the University of Toronto, and afternoon workshops focused on specific case studies of harassment and violence.
The conference program, speaker bios and poster abstracts are available at www.busi.mun.ca/mer-conference.
Conference delegates include workers, union representatives, academic researchers, students, managers, human resource and employment relations specialists, and employment relations lawyers.
