SUBJECT: Event preps students for life after university

DATE: March 18

The official kick-off of spring this Friday also means the end of another academic year is just around the corner. Thousands of students are gearing up for graduation and are preparing to write their final exams next month and start concentrating on landing a job.
And with that, Memorial is handing students a road map for their future, helping guide students set to graduate in the right direction.
A unique event – known as Grad Street Festival – will take place on the third floor of the University Centre on Friday, March 20, from 10 a.m., to 4 p.m., in The Landing.
A series of booths will be set up providing students with information about things such as how to register for convocation ceremonies, receive tickets and rent a cap and gown.
Students will also get the scoop on careers after graduation, discover the benefits of becoming one of Memorial’s alumni, be able to explore graduate programs and learn more about diploma framing, class rings, souvenirs and apparel.
The event is based on the concept of “a road to your future” with each stop along the way containing specific information.
“Directional road signage will direct students along the road in a progressive path as they complete the steps necessary to graduate,” said festival co-ordinator Jessica Clarke of the Division of Marketing and Communications. “The festival atmosphere will be accentuated with entertainment and prizes during lunch.
“The purpose of the event is to get students in the know and up to date on all information relevant to graduating,” she added.
Marketing and Communications is collaborating with a number of units and departments to organize the event for a second year, including Alumni Affairs and Development, the Registrar's Office, the Centre for Career Development, the School of Graduate Studies, the Marine Institute and the University Bookstore.
“This event is so important because it assures students that they are completing all the right steps to becoming a graduate,” said Ms. Clarke. “They are able to meet face-to-face with the Memorial people who provide all these services."
