SUBJECT: Applied research and students focus of Marine Institute’s growth and expansion

The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland is moving forward to evolve its structure and expand its applied research and industrial activities. Glenn Blackwood, MI’s executive director, announced two significant organizational developments today. These changes are the integration of the Canadian Centre for Marine Communications (CCMC) into MI’s School of Ocean Technology and the establishment of a new division of Academic and Student Affairs.
Already established and offering programs in ocean instrumentation and remotely operated vehicle technology, the school will be expanding its research efforts by integrating CCMC as an applied research unit.
"Within the Marine Institute, each school has a dual mandate to provide education and training as well as to undertake applied research and development,” said Dwight Howse, head, School of Ocean Technology. “The School of Ocean Technology has established training programs in Ocean Instrumentation and in ROV Operations. Through this integration, the school's complementary applied research and development role will be given a significant head-start based upon the expertise, facilities, creative energy and working relationships that have been established by CCMC over the past 19 years."
Glenn Blackwood agrees, saying that the integration is mutually advantageous for both parties. “Like the program side, the applied research side is well underway”, he said. In that regard, CCMC has launched such projects as SmartBay, Journal of Ocean Technology and the Ocean Innovation Conference. The Marine Institute will continue to support and expand these and other innovative initiatives of CCMC.”
The Marine Institute will also welcome a well-recognized team to lead the school’s expertise in ocean technology research and development. Randy Gillespie will serve as director of the Applied Research Unit, Neil Cater as manager of Ocean Instrumentation and Bill Carter as manager of Ocean Observation. 
Also joining the senior executive of the Institute is Ron Newhook. Former president of CCMC, Mr. Newhook will serve as the institute’s director of research and development. In this role he will be responsible for coordinating and enhancing research and development activities across the institute.
The Canadian Centre for Marine Communications (CCMC) was established in 1989 as a not-for-profit corporation to support marine information and communication technology industries in Canada. Since its inception, CCMC has played a key role in the financing, development and marketing of a wide range of technologies that support safe maritime operations worldwide. A key proponent for promoting Canadian ocean technology solutions to the world, CCMC has throughout its history served as a technical and business partner for a range of clients and collaborators extending from small companies and maritime administrations to large multinational corporations and governments worldwide.   
“VISION 2020, the Marine Institute’s future developmental strategy, including the launch of the new School of Ocean technology, charts a course for the institute over the coming years,” Newhook said.  “The Marine Institute, recognizing that there exists a substantial repository of expertise at the centre, presented, and CCMC accepted, an integration proposal whereby the centre would form the foundation on which to establish the applied research and development and industrial outreach arm of the new the school.”
The organizational structure of the institute is also poised for growth and expansion. Mr. Blackwood also announced the establishment of a new Academic and Students Affairs Division within the institute.
“The new division will be responsible for ensuring that the institute achieves its goals related to the development of a suite of world class programs across ocean sectors,” Mr. Blackwood said. “It will also coordinate and enhance student services. This reinforces our goals and our commitment to supporting students in their pursuit of a long standing career in the oceans sector.”
The division will be led by Dr. Peter Fisher, a current senior executive member at the institute, and will incorporate recruitment, admissions, registration, student services, student development and other academic and non-academic support services.
The Marine Institute is North America’s most comprehensive institute dedicated to the education, training, applied research and industrial support for the oceans industries.
