SUBJECT: Memorial University to hold convocation ceremonies May 28-30

It's graduation time at Memorial University. Hundreds of students are going to be recognized for their hard work during annual spring convocation ceremonies being held in St. John's later this week.

Convocation ceremonies will commence on Wednesday, May 28 and continue through Friday, May 30, and will be held at the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre. The seven sessions of convocation in St. John's will also see honorary degrees awarded to outstanding men and women from business, science, public life and the arts. The honorary graduands include former federal cabinet minister, Flora MacDonald; noted tenor, Ben Heppner, president of the National Research Council, Dr. Arthur Carty; Newfoundland and Labrador entrepreneur, Melvin Woodward; Thomas Kent, political and social policy researcher and administrator; former chairman of Memorial's Board of Regents and Lt.-Gov. of Newfoundland and Labrador, The Hon. Edward Roberts; and noted choral musician Sir David Willcocks.

Approximately 2,000 degrees will be awarded at the seven sessions of convocation. There will be three sessions of convocation on Wednesday, May 28 (10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.), and two sessions, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., on each of May 29 and May 30.

Former Memorial University president, Dr. Arthur May, will be honoured with the designation president emeritus at the May 30, 10 a.m. session of convocation. Dr. May, Memorial's alumnus of the year for 1983, served as president from 1990 to 1999. The title of president emeritus is granted for outstanding service and achievement to the university in that leadership capacity.

Memorial's president, Dr. Axel Meisen, will deliver his report to convocation during the 10 a.m. session of convocation on Friday, May 30. For further information about convocation, please visit
