SUBJECT: SWGC: Grenfell Art Gallery announces Student Video Night and closing reception for film and video festival

DATE: Feb. 1

Sir Wilfred Grenfell Art Gallery will host a closing reception to cap a successful and well-attended three-month film festival. Beginning in late November, the gallery presented eight varied contemporary film and video screenings and two video installation exhibitions. The festival encouraged the creation of a film culture at Grenfell College and was a timely endeavor in light of the recent movement towards establishing a film studies program on the Grenfell campus. The festival’s grand finale event is a Student Video Night on Friday featuring screenings of works by students of the Visual Arts Program at Grenfell College.

Film, video and new media are important avenues of expression for artists, but they are forms of visual art that may not be well understood or appreciated by the community. It is part the gallery’s purpose to provide the public with opportunities to consider art they will not see elsewhere in the region. It is also important to acknowledge the accomplishments of student artists using the video medium. The Student Video Night is an opportunity for the community to experience a range of student video art. Some of the videos to be presented on Friday have been produced as class projects, while others were created especially for the festival. The Student Video Night was organized and curated by Anne Downton and Krystle Hayden, fourth-year students in the Visual Arts Program. Among the artists included in the screenings are Downton and Hayden, who also collaborated on a video with Jamie Lee Cormier and Herb Gibbons, as well as fourth-year student Jackie Lambert and second year student John Foster,.

The gallery celebrates the Student Video Night and the closing of the festival with a public reception on Friday, February 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building atrium. The Student Video Night screenings will begin at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building Lecture Theatre, FA 224. Admission is free and all are invited.
