SUBJECT: Memorial University partners with international society to honour outstanding local business achievements

DATE: March 14

Memorial University of Newfoundland and Beta Gamma Sigma recognized the outstanding accomplishments of some of Newfoundland and Labrador's sharpest business minds today. Thirty-eight business students from Memorial were inducted into the prestigious Beta Gamma Sigma international honour society. Miller Ayre, publisher of The Telegram and David Baird, president of Baird and Associates, were also inducted as honourary members of the society in recognition of their contributions to the local business community.

Being inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive at a school accredited by AACSB International-the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Memorial's Faculty of Business Administration achieved this international accreditation in 2002.

"I am delighted to be inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma society and to advance its mission among our students," said Dr. Gary Gorman, dean of Memorial's Faculty of Business Administration and honourary society member. "The international business community recognizes that Beta Gamma Sigma members have attained academic excellence and are committed to ethical and professional business practices and I am pleased to support a local chapter."

While almost 300,000 students receive a bachelor or master degree in business each year, only about 18,000 are inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma. Students ranking in the top seven per cent of the junior class, top 10 per cent of the senior class and top 20 per cent of the master programs at schools accredited by AACSB are eligible to be inducted into the society.

Beta Gamma Sigma was founded as a national organization in 1913. Its mission is to encourage and honour academic achievement in the study of business and personal and professional excellence in the practice of business. The society encourages its members to follow the principles and values of Beta Gamma Sigma: honour and integrity, pursuit of wisdom and earnestness.
