Workplace Health and Safety Committees
A workplace health and safety committee (WHSC) is an advisory group made up of representatives from management and workers. The committee provides a forum for communication between the employer and the worker to address health and safety concerns in the workplace.
In an effort to reduce workplace accidents and injuries, committees identify and evaluate concerns, make recommendations for corrective action and promote health and safety in the workplace. Committees are a legislated requirement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
On Campus OHS Committee Training
OHS Committee Training seminars are conducted in class, on campus for employees of Memorial. To request OHS Committee training, please fill out a training request form.
Committees play a major role in developing a positive safety culture in the workplace. They act as safety champions on behalf of the University when they identify potential hazards, evaluate hazards, recommend corrective actions and follow-up on implemented recommendations.
There are 25 WHSCs at Memorial University, covering all buildings on campus.
