Funding

The amount of funding the Department is able to offer for graduate support is limited. We strongly recommend that applicants investigate all possibilities for outside scholarships and awards. To meet the deadlines of most funding agencies this process needs to be started early: a year before the September of entry to our program.

Memorial University offers competitive funding packages to academically eligible full-time graduate students, both Canadian and international, in eligible programs. Select PhD students will also automatically be considered for the School of Graduate Studies Dean’s Doctoral Award , through a competitive process. The award is an additional amount of $5000 per year for up to four years.

For Canadian applicants the major funding agency is the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) which offers MA and Doctoral fellowships. Application should be made from the applicant's university in the Fall of the final year of a BA program, for entry to the MA, and in the last year of an MA for entry to the PhD. A student who waits to apply until they are in our program is missing out on a year of financial support, and at better rates than we can offer.

Applicants from Commonwealth countries should investigate Commonwealth Scholarships.

American applicants are encouraged to apply for a Fulbright Scholarship.

The School of Graduate Studies page gives further external funding suggestions. We will nominate our best-qualified applicants for scholarships and awards offered by Memorial University.

These sources aside, the Department of Folklore offers a number of funding packages each year which can cover a portion of the costs of our program. These currently stand at approximately $8,000 a year for master's students and $11,000 for doctoral students.
