Research Statement

My research is focused on heritage and self-reliance in the European settler communities in Newfoundland. Using artefacts from the Colony of Avalon site I will explore the ways in which the settlers were able to be self-sustaining despite their limited access to the materials and trade networks to which they had access in their home countries. I will explore one task which is significant to a settlement’s successful self-reliance in comparison with the methods in which we perform this task in the modern day. I will study the benefits and downfalls of each practice in order to inspire more self-reliant and localized practices in the present.
