SUBJECT: Memorial University presents Canada Research Chairs lecture, Engineering Our Resources

DATE: May 3

Memorial University will hold another in its series of Canada Research Chair lectures, titled Engineering Our Resources, which will take place on Thursday, May 6, at 12:30 p.m. in the Engineering Lecture Theatre (EN-2006), S.J. Carew Building, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.

Dr. Rangaswamy Seshadri will present the lecture, Integrity Assessment of Engineered Oil and Gas Facilities. Oil and gas facilities are large financial investments. An understanding of the framework and strategy for failure avoidance is imperative. He will give an overview of the issues pertaining to the integrity assessment of these assets.

Dr. Neil Bose will give an overview of components of the underwater vehicle research being done at Memorial University, in his lecture, Aspects of Underwater Vehicle Research. This will focus on some of the research sub-projects, such as work being done on a cyclic pitch propulsor and on use of vehicles for ocean environmental monitoring.

Dr. Thormod Johansen will present Planning Tools in Oil and Gas Developments. Novel technologies can improve the recovery efficiency and the over all economics of field developments. For optimal well placement in the reservoir and well completion, planning tools are needed. These are fluid flow simulators, which incorporate the reservoir properties. Dr. Johansen will talk about the lack of adequate planning tools and how research in this area can provide the industry with the desired tools for optimal well planning.

The lecture is open to the public. Parking is available in Lot 16. Light refreshments available.
