SUBJECT: Speaking of Engineering lecture series continues on April 20

DATE: April 12

Have you ever wondered how St. Johnís became the gateway to the Arctic? On Tuesday, April 20, there will be a public presentation by Dr. Mary Williams, director general of the National Research Council Institute for Ocean Technology (NRC/IOT), who will talk about St. Johnís and its role in the shipping industry. Over the past two centuries, many ship expeditions to the Arctic have passed through St. John's. They came here for supplies and for sailors experienced in Arctic navigation. In the coming decade, shipping to the Canadian Arctic will increase. St. John's will continue to act as a gateway, virtual and practical, for modern Arctic traffic. Dr. Williams will talk about a Newfoundland tradition of expertise in Arctic shipping, and how that expertise is playing an important role in modern exploration and development in the Arctic.

The event is hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University and the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador. It begins at 7:30 p.m. (room EN2006) in the Engineering Building on Memorial Universityís St. Johnís campus. Admission is free. All are welcome. Reception will follow.
