SUBJECT: Spring convocation 2007: Student success stories

DATE: May 23

Note to editors:
Memorial University’s spring convocation continues this week.
From May 23-25, more than 2,000 degrees will be awarded during eight sessions of convocation, which are being held at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s.
Outstanding individuals from the worlds of business, public life, the arts and sports will be awarded honorary degrees during the ceremonies.
Convocation is the highlight of a university career for students and heralds the end of an important life stage and the beginning of something new.
While every student has a worthy story, the following students could make for interesting feature stories.
For convocation ceremonies on Thursday, May 24, 2007:
May 24 will be a unforgettable day for Rose Marie Murphy, a retired teacher and single mother in Labrador City, when she visits St. John’s to see her two children graduate from medical school. Chris, 30, and Sean, 28, have experienced a lot of brotherly togetherness over the last four years as they shared an apartment and sat next to each other in class.
The Murphy brothers now face specialty training, with Sean staying at Memorial for a residency in obstetrics and gynecology while Chris goes to Dalhousie University for a residency in psychiatry. They’ll graduate at the 10 a.m. session.
