REF NO.: 65

SUBJECT: Alcohol awareness day at Memorial

DATE: Nov. 21

Organizers of a day-long event taking place on Memorial’s St. John’s campus during National Addictions Awareness Week want to remind students about the importance of responsible drinking.
Alcohol Awareness Day is taking place on Thursday, Nov. 23. Students will have an opportunity to speak one-on-one with a counselling professional about alcohol trends, learn more about how alcohol can affect their health and lives, and participate in a free anonymous alcohol screening survey to help better gauge their patterns for alcohol.
“We’re trying to put a spotlight on the drinking issues that are relevant to Memorial students,” said Dr. Janet Krantz, an assistant professor and outreach event co-ordinator with the University Counselling Centre, a Division of Student Affairs and Services. “We want to help students think about patterns of responsible drinking.”
Alcohol Awareness Day is a free event and is primarily targeted at students. The event takes place from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. in the University Centre, room 3013.
“We’re not looking to promote an abstinence campaign but we are very interested in promoting responsible drinking,” Dr. Krantz added.
Media agencies are invited to send representatives to this year’s event.
