Sheila Devine has been appointed Memorial University's new director of Student Recruitment. Ms. Devine brings a diverse background of university experience to her new position, having served in many roles at universities across Canada, including Memorial, where she served as admissions officer and associate registrar.

In her new position, Ms. Devine will assume responsibility for overseeing, co-ordinating, and developing undergraduate student recruitment at Memorial. Reporting to Dr. Michael Collins, associate vice-president (academic), she will play a central role in defining and developing the strategy and processes necessary to meet the university's student recruitment targets.

Currently the associate vice-principal (faculty relations) at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Ms. Devine has also worked as the director of equity issues at the University of Victoria and director of admissions at the University of Calgary and has completed international work in such countries as Mozambique, Ukraine and Australia. "I am very pleased to return to Memorial University where I received a very high quality undergraduate education and where I started my career", she said. "I view this as a wonderful opportunity to work as a member of a very professional team to promote the University and attract new students at this time of great challenge and opportunity."

Ms. Devine earned her BA at Memorial University in 1971, followed by a B.Ed. from Memorial in 1981. In 1984 she completed a law degree at the University of Windsor in Ontario.

In a volunteer capacity, Ms. Devine has served as honorary president of the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society at Queen's, and is active in exercising her legal knowledge at conferences and workshops dealing with students and legal issues.

"We are confident Ms. Devine will make a tremendous contribution to our student recruitment team, as well as to the university generally," said Dr. Evan Simpson, vice-president (academic). "Her experience in various educational institutions throughout the country provides her with the knowledge and perspective required for Memorial to compete effectively for good students provincially, nationally and internationally."
