SUBJECT: Director of International Association of Oil and Gas Producers to speak at Memorial University

DATE: March 27

Note to editors:

The Oil and Gas Development Partnership Lecture Series continues at Memorial University on Monday, April 7, 2003, with a lecture titled Change and Challenge. Presented by Alan Grant, executive director, International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP), the lecture will highlight the many changes and challenges facing both the international oil and gas industry and the OGP. Some of the significant issues facing the OGP include the security of supply, corporate social responsibility and the problems of access. The lecture starts at 5 p.m. in the Engineering Lecture Theatre (EN-2006) located off the main lobby of the S.J. Carew (Engineering) Building, located on the north side of Memorial's St. John's campus. Media agencies are encouraged to send representatives.

"Now at the beginning of a new century, probably the only certainty facing the upstream industry over the next 20 to 30 years is that changes will accelerate and challenges will increase," Mr. Grant said. "The OGP encompasses the world's leading private and state-owned oil and gas companies and so we have a big role to play in helping to achieve new levels of performance."

Alan Grant became executive director of the OGP in February, 2001. His career with the oil and gas industry spans almost 30 years and includes assignments in Oman, Brunei, Russia, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In 1971 he joined Shell and started his career working on improving oil recovery from the giant oil fields of Southern Iran. He held numerous posts before securing a position as development manager of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company (BSP) where he was responsible for all aspects of development and appraisal of BSP's fields.

After Brunei, Mr. Grant held a succession of appointments as director of research, staff manager and vice-president for joint ventures and planning in Russia, before assuming the position of president of Sakhalin Energy Investment Company, a joint venture of Marathon, Mitsubishi, Mitsui and Shell. In 2000, he retired from Shell and returned to the United Kingdom. In addition to his work with the OGP, he is currently a non-executive director of Maersk Oil (UK) Limited.

Initiated in September 2001, the Oil and Gas Development Partnership Lecture Series brings together industry, academia, government and the community, providing information on new developments, issues, technologies and trends that directly affect the future of the east coast industry.
